Had a coupon I got in a mailer and decided so we decided to give a more independent local place a try. This is a smaller establishment and they only had one table and a booth open when we went in for a late morning Saturday breakfast recently. The booths here are small and uncushioned and our server was just below average. Our coffee got gone at one point and we really wanted to add a Coke into the mix and that was unpleasant after waiting a bit too long for a fill. That being said, reconsideration of their coffee brand or brew method should be done ASAP. Not sure if we got some out of an old/badly brewed pot, but both servings were really poor tasting. I doctor mine up with cream and sugar and BF takes his black and we both agreed it just sucked all around. Coffee is just too important for a breakfast place to get wrong. The actual food was good. BF had a basic 2 egg, sausage, and toast plate and I had a 3 egg Greek omelette that came topped with a lot of feta. My omelette came with a decent amount of hashbrowns. Our boy had a kids menu pancake with bacon. Out came a single mousehead pancake which made him pretty happy and the bacon was cooked nicely. The grill is out in the open and the food did not take super long to come out. They are advertising their brand new Belgian waffles on their sign out front and their mailer, but they weren't prominently featured or pushed. Might've gave them a try had they been. Our breakfast bill for 3 was about $25 before the coupon, which is comparable to other places. When we first walked in we waited a few minutes for our booth to be bussed and cleaned and one of the cooks gave us 3 little suckers. Looks like they like to accommodate the kids and that's nice. Overall an average place that's probably hovering closer to 2.5 stars. The blips we had were offset by the coupon discount. Would've been extra disgruntled otherwise. Wish it was more comfy and less utilitarian / Weekday Working Joe, too.

I am kind of surprised by all the good reviews. We went on a Sunday for breakfast. The food was average. The service was not that good. Maybe we went on a bad day,but the tables around us felt how we felt. Food took a long time once ordered. I felt they were short staffed. I will not be back. Nothing special.

Used to be amazing when Dave was running it! Awesome waitresses, good food, and a total "where everyone knows your name" kind of place. Unfortunately Dave sold the business and all the old waitresses and cooks left. It hasn't been the same since. Slow service, half decent food, just not worth the hassle.

This is the best breakfast I have had period. The food is fantastic and the employees are fun and friendly. You must try the sausage gravy. I am getting very hungry just thinking about going back. This is not your crepe or fancy muffin restaurant, this is real live breakfast food.

Who is Dave, and why is he important to this review? I'll tell you why. I promise it's worth it. Dave was a local legend, a man of the griddle. He was a man that took a hole in the wall establishment, and turned it into a smoke filled diner that brought people from miles around to enjoy great pancakes, superb French toast, amazing biscuits and gravy, and of course the trophy coney dog. He became the friend you wanted to join for breakfast every morning. He entertained consistently by having an open kitchen set up to showcase his skill, and for years the hard work and passion he poured in every omelette was enjoyed by its patrons. Eventually, Daves passion started to turn more into a pilot light and it slowly faded. Personally, I don't blame him. I can only do the same thing everyday for a year, much less 25 like Dave had. Eventually as customers faded, so did the food, but it never turned sour. Dave was a legend. The story of a man who started from scratch, worked alongside his family, offered good homemade food at great prices, loved Michigan football, and left his station for retirement so he could finally take that "break" he deserved. A new owner took over Daves, and within months destroyed everything good about it. If I was reviewing "that" Daves, it would have received one star. The worst offense wasn't the fact the new owner wanted to change everything. It was the fact that he kept Daves name on it. Twenty five years of hard work was destroyed. The food eventually dwindled down to tasteless, always cold, never seasoned food. Nasty hand held poster boards filled the windows with special this, special that. Ironically, the food was always cheaper anyways. I truly believed the next time I drove past Daves, it would be closed forever. After about five months of letting the restaurant smother itself, I drove back to find the doors still open, and new owners working the grill. I was delighted to see the griddle heated up with a ton of food on it like the old days. When I walked into Daves recently, I was brought back to my childhood. The smell of breakfast filled the air and hovered my fat butt right to the counter right behind the griddle. Everything from fresh omelets, to huge slices of Texas toast French toast drove my senses crazy! I pretty much ordered one of everything and it was superb. One of the owners Ali, was cooking everything personally, checking plate after plate, watching everything from the flavor to the consistency of each hotcake. I cannot tell a lie as the location is almost, almost a border dive. Mimicking a Waffle House in color and set up (Ironically, they dont serve waffles ) don't expect to walk in the door and be wowed or amazed with the decor. You can only have expectations in the food, which has always been the staple of Daves, as you walk in, sit down, and hopefully have a bulging belly ache after from eating so much delicious food. One must try the biscuit and gravy. It's homemade biscuits will remind you of your grandmothers. The gravy is floating with spices, herbs, and is complex with just enough heat to make you feel like you were back home but sampling the south. My final thought on Daves is simple. One day I hope to drive past that old restaurant and see the name Ali's Coney Island. The torch may not have been passed correctly the first time, but to literally watch young entrepreneurs like Ali and his brother take on dedication and passion plate after plate, I can only announce with excitement that White Lake has a new breakfast tradition that will remind you of the good times and express the hope in the American Dream. Like Dave when he first opened the doors and built a hometown empire, I only hope the best and can't wait to age with it, and watch it grow as its own business. In the end Daves is like a homemade biscuit itself. It's crumbly on the outside, but when topped with a wonderful complex gravy, it makes everything in your life complete.
